Liverpool striker Robbie Keane has been left out of the squad to play Chelsea, amid talk he could be on the move back to Tottenham.
This latest snub for the striker brought to Anfield in the summer for £18million is only likely to heighten speculation over his future, especially when taking into account Fernando Torres remains the club's only other recognised senior front-man.
Keane has frequently stated his desire to stay at boyhood favourites Liverpool but it would appear Benitez no longer feels the Irishman's face fits on Merseyside.
Benitez stated on Friday that he was less than happy about Harry Redknapp's quotes with regards his admiration for the player, but it would appear a White Hart Lane return is not out of the question.
Saturday's defeat at Bolton has raised further question marks over Tottenham's Premier League status, with Redknapp's side hovering just a point above the drop zone.
Spurs' board are known to be willing to spend again before the close of January's window on Monday, but whether Keane will emerge as a credible target remains very much the subject of conjecture.
