Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has described the controversial spot-kick awarded for his team as 'a perfect penalty'.
Sunderland counterpart Ricky Sbragia was less than happy with the decision that resulted in Shola Ameobi's equaliser, but Kinnear remains convinced that Howard Webb was right to award the penalty.
"If you tackle somebody from behind and catch his leg then that's a guaranteed penalty," he told Sky Sports.
"I haven't seen the replay but what I saw was his legs being taken away from him. I would say it was a perfect penalty."
Despite going a goal down before half-time, the Newcastle players returned for the second period with a renewed intent that delighted their beleaguered boss.
"I think they scored their goal against the run of play, but we showed remarkable courage to get back in the game," Kinnear added.
"Today was one of those days when most of the crucial decisions went against us, but nevertheless we showed some great character and we always looked the team that was going to win the game.
"We played some decent football in the second half, they were camped in their own half for long periods of the game, and on another day we'd have possibly got an odd decision go our way for a change.
"But it was a very entertaining game, a blood and thunder, so everybody gets a pat on the back and we live to fight another day."
