Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear has revealed he failed in a bid to sign Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia.
Kinnear is anxiously trying to add to his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday and currently has offers for two players on the table.
He signed Kevin Nolan from Bolton Wanderers on Friday and is waiting for Ryan Taylor to finalise his move from Wigan Athletic in a deal which will see Charles N'Zogbia move in the opposite direction.
However, Kinnear has confirmed that an approach to bring veteran centre-half Hyypia to St James' Park was turned down by Liverpool.
"I have spent most of the last two days trying to get finance and players," said Kinnear after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
"I will start working on finances and players now right up until midnight and then tomorrow. Fingers crossed we can get all four deals done.
"I tried for one centre-half, but got knocked back. Liverpool weren't prepared to let Hyypia out.
"I want to get somebody with experience because of the position we are in. We have a very young back four and I just want somebody who is a good organiser."
Hyypia has been in and out of the Liverpool side this season as the 35-year-old approaches a decade at Anfield following the Finn's move from Willem II Tilburg in 1999.
