Redknapp rues King injury

Harry Redknapp has revealed that captain Ledley King faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury against Portsmouth.

King was replaced by Michael Dawson in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Spurs skipper is no stranger to the treatment room over the last few seasons and his loss could force Redknapp into the transfer market for another centre-half.

The defender was not the only casualty in the entertaining draw with striker Roman Pavlyuchenko also hobbling off in the first-half and several other players forced to carry on with knocks and strains.

Because of this the former Pompey boss highlighted his side's character after a Jermain Defoe strike against his former club had cancelled out David Nugent's opener.

"You saw today we picked up a few injuries. Ledley is going to be out for the long term so we need to strengthen the squad," Redknapp told Sky Sports 1.

"In the end we missed chance after chance, they (Portsmouth) played well but we showed great character. We had lost two players in the first half and there were three players who were not fit to play on at half-time but we had no choice.

"(Aaron) Lennon had a bad groin and (Vedran) Corluka had a strain and the goalkeeper was obviously struggling as well.

"But to come from 1-0 down they could have easily hid and felt sorry for themselves but they didn't, I thought the lads were fantastic."

Striker Darren Bent missed a golden opportunity to claim all three points but his header from no more than two yards out failed to hit the target.

"What can he say, he should have scored," Redknapp added.

"Jamo (David James) had given it up. I think David was waiting to pick the ball out of the back of the net.

"There is nothing we can do with it now, he didn't miss on purpose, if we continue to play like that we will be ok."

The point lifted Spurs out of the bottom three on goal difference and Redknapp is confident his side will avoid the drop.

"I am very confident, there is no problem but we need to get a few more people in, but I have no doubts this group will be ok," Redknapp explained.
