Marseille have ruled out re-signing Didier Drogba as they cannot afford him, while they also doubt whether he would even consider returning to the club.
The former Guingamp striker had a successful one-year spell with l'OM in the 2003/04 campaign before securing a big-money move Chelsea.
It had been suggested in the French press on Tuesday the club were putting together an audacious bid to bring him back to Stade Velodrome.
However, the club's sporting director Jose Anigo believes that Drogba's excessive wage packet rules out any French outfit securing his signature.
"The problem with Didier is that even if he wanted to come to Marseille, there is a financial problem," Anigo told French radio station RMC.
"For a French club, he represents €12million per year (£10.9m). He is inaccessible to all French clubs."
As if any more reasons were needed to quash links between Marseille and Drogba, the club are set to increase their striking options after agreeing a fee with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brandao.
With Eric Gerets having plenty of striking options to choose from, Anigo has confirmed a number of youngsters could now be loaned out, including Elliot Grandin and Mamadou Samassa.
"Maybe we will lend Grandin," he continued. "About Samassa, we have to ask ourselves, because we must not stop young people being given playing time."
