Wigan are locked in talks with Middlesbrough target Ben Watson.
As revealed earlier this week, Wigan were among a number of clubs ready to rival Middlesbrough for Watson.
Wigan have been given permission to speak to Watson by Crystal Palace after matching Boro's fee for the midfielder.
Watson held talks with Middlesbrough on Thursday about a possible move to the Riverside, but Wigan are hoping to beat their Premier League rivals to the 23-year-old's signature.
Latics boss Steve Bruce has money to spend following the sale of Wilson Palacios to Tottenham and he has earmarked Watson as an ideal replacement for the Honduran.
Palace have decided to cash-in on Watson with the player's contract due to expire in the summer.
