Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear is hoping the return of Joey Barton can give the side a much-needed boost.
Barton made his return to action as a substitute in last weekend's 3-0 defeat by Blackburn and continued his bid for fitness with a run-out in a practice game against Carlisle on Tuesday.
Kinnear is delighted to have the midfield dynamo back in action and believes Barton could help the side end their poor run of form.
"Having Joey back is a big bonus," Kinnear told the club's official website.
"I thought it was important to give him a run-out at Blackburn and then again in Tuesday's game with Carlisle.
"He has a great desire to win and is a box-to-box midfielder who will give his all.
"He could be a very important player for us between now and the end of the season."
