Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wigan are the best team to come to Old Trafford this season after Manchester United's hard-fought 1-0 win.
The hosts got off to the best possible start with Wayne Rooney tapping in from a Cristiano Ronaldo cross from the right to fire United into the lead.
Wigan, who played with two up front for the entire game, soon composed themselves and in the second half especially really threatened the champions.
The win came at a cost for United as shortly after opening the scoring Rooney limped off with a suspected hamstring injury and is expected to be out for up to three weeks.
"It was as tough as we were expecting. Wigan were fantastic," Ferguson told Sky Sports.
"They were the best team to come to Old Trafford this season. We showed good character and it was an important 1-0 victory."
The United boss knows how important games become after the Christmas period and he has urged his side to carry on their good form.
"We need to kick on. This is the time where we are in the run-in, we have to go to Bolton on Saturday and that's a tough game," Ferguson added.
Despite their bright start United were never really at their best giving the ball away cheaply on numerous occasions but the Scot explains this is to be expected after such a big game against Chelsea three days earlier.
"These big games take a lot out of you mentally so it does take its toll," Ferguson insisted.
"We tried to freshen it up but it shows our character especially the last 30 minutes because Wigan it was a brilliant performance from them."
Even though his team's performance was not what many were expecting following their defeat of Chelsea the 67-year-old singled out his defender Nemanja Vidic for special praise.
"We are playing our best stuff, there is a great determination in the team," he said.
"Vidic's defending was immense and he epitomises the spirit and the character of the team at the moment."
