Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has revealed he will 'fight like hell' to keep Michael Owen at St James' Park.
Kinnear has confirmed that contract talks with the striker, who was on target in the Magpies' 3-0 win over Portsmouth at the weekend, will commence on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old's current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and, should Owen not agree fresh terms on Tyneside, he would be allowed to leave for free in the summer.
"I've had a good relationship with Michael from day one," said Kinnear.
"He's in control of his future. On Tuesday we will sit down to talk things through and his agent will be there.
"I will fight like hell to keep him. I don't see any point taking money for Michael Owen. I would rather have him in my team scoring goals than any amount of cash.
"When I was a player I played with Jimmy Greaves and Michael is very similar."
