Given - Owen back to his best

Shay Given hopes Michael Owen is now back to his best as Newcastle attempt to climb the Premier League table.

The Magpies have failed to win in their last five games and sit one place and one point above the relegation zone.

But goalkeeper Given is hopeful Owen, who scored twice in Saturday's draw with Stoke, is close to top form to help Joe Kinnear's side out of trouble.

Striker Owen's season has been disrupted by injury, but Given is optimistic his colleague is close to rediscovering his full predatory instincts.

"We hope so," Given told Sky Sports News when asked if Owen was firing on all cylinders.

"We know if we create chances for Michael he will stick them away and he has been doing that for all of his career."

Given also believes the recent extension of interim boss Kinnear's contract to the end of the season has added a sense of calm on Tyneside.

And the Republic of Ireland international hopes his manager will be busy in the January transfer market.

"Joe being the manager gives us a little bit of stability," Given added.

"January will give the opportunity to freshen things ups, even if it is just with loan players."
