Fergie backs Berba to shine

Sir Alex Ferguson has no doubts that Dimitar Berbatov will prove to be worth the £30.75million Manchester United invested in his services.

Berbatov left Tottenham for Old Trafford on the final day of the transfer window but has so far failed to display his undoubted talent on a regular basis.

With the Red Devils travelling to Spurs for Saturday's Premier League clash, Berbatov could be up against his former club, provided he can overcome an Achilles injury.

And Ferguson is confident that the Bulgaria international will prove his critics wrong and become an integral part of the United side.

"Dimitar is a great player," said the United boss. "We are still getting used to using him properly.

"You can see the quality. He is fantastic. There are very few players who can produce moments like he does in games. It can decide them."

Should Berbatov take to the field at White Hart Lane on Saturday, then Ferguson knows he is guaranteed a heated reception from Spurs fans unhappy at the manner of his exit.

"He is going to get the reception we expect," said the Red Devils chief. "It is part of modern-day society and is never going to change.

"Berbatov knows he is going to get a lot of abuse from the fans."

Ferguson feels the Spurs fans are still smarting over Michael Carrick's switch two years earlier, but insists they did well out of both transfers and also secured the services of Fraizer Campbell on loan for the season.

"If it had been anyone apart from United it would not have caused as much of a furore," the Scot added.

"They still regret selling Carrick to us, which is the biggest problem. But they wanted to sell him to us, so I can't see how they blame us for that.

"They got a good deal on that last day as well, getting Fraizer Campbell in the bargain. They really milked it well."
