Voronin keen to prove a point

Ukrainian forward Andriy Voronin is determined to use Wednesday's match against England as the platform to prove that he can still do a job for Liverpool.

The 29-year-old was loaned out to Hertha Berlin in the summer and his goals, 11 in 20 starts, have helped propel the team to the top of the Bundesliga.

Hertha are said to be desperate to land the former Bayer Leverkusen ace on a permanent basis but may be put off by Liverpool's hefty valuation.

However the Ukraine international has not given up hope of returning to Anfield and proving that he can be a success at the club.

"I would love to come back to Liverpool, not as a number five or six or to sit on the bench or to watch the match," he said.

"I would like to come back to play. There are certain offers, I'm going to discuss them with my agent and take it from there."

Voronin is adamant that he was not given a fair crack of the whip during his first year on Merseyside but it is unlikely that the frontman would ever start ahead of Rafa Benitez's first choice pairing of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

"I don't think I was given a fair chance," he added.

"If it were not for the transfer of Robbie Keane I think I could have shown much more of what I was capable of.

"I also had three months of injury with a hamstring tear. With that sort of injury you need a long time to recover and have to start proving yourself again."

As for the midweek World Cup qualifier, Voronin is quietly confident and reveals that strike partner Andriy Shevchenko has been dishing out information on his former Chelsea colleagues.

"We all know what the Premier League is about but because Shevchenko played with John Terry and he has much to offer and discuss with the coach."
