The best chance of the first half fell to Robin van Persie whose header was pushed over the bar by Mark Schwarzer in the 11th minute.
Moments earlier Andy Johnson had a great chance when he latched onto Bobby Zamora's flick on but the England striker dragged his effort wide of the mark.
Chances went begging at either end with Russian star Andrey Arshavin seeing two of his strikes blaze over on either side of the halves.
Van Persie could have opened his account deep into the second half when his glanced header struck Schwarzer's far post. The Australian shot stopper also denied Abou Diaby minutes later.
