Terry focused on England

John Terry has expressed his surprise at Luiz Felipe Scolari's dismissal from Chelsea but insisted that he is concentrating solely on leading England into battle against Spain on Wednesday.

Scolari was sacked on Monday despite the fact that Chelsea are still in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, and have only recently fallen off the pace in the Premier League title race.

Terry had already linked up with the England squad when news of Scolari's departure broke and he is looking forward to the clash with Spain.

Fabio Capello's men face a difficult test against the Euro 2008 champions and Terry realises the importance of the match.

Asked about Chelsea, Terry said: "Things haven't been going too well of late at the club and to come here and concentrate on England is a step away from what's happening at home.

"The manager has stressed he wants everyone focused on the game ahead. I want to put in a good performance personally and hopefully the squad can do the same."

Terry accepts that Scolari paid the price for Chelsea's poor performances when the players were just as much to blame.

He said: "I was very shocked by what's happened. He had my full support, that's for sure.

"He's a great man but we weren't playing well and that unfortunately falls on his head.

"Maybe it should have fallen more on us players.

"At the end of the day it's all about results and unfortunately for Scolari they didn't come."
