Storrie urges Adams patience

Portsmouth chairman Peter Storrie has called for critics to lay off under-fire boss Tony Adams.

The Fratton Park manager has seen his position questioned in some quarters after enduring a difficult start to life in the Pompey hot-seat.

Adams faced the unenviable task of filling Harry Redknapp's shoes in October, with the popular coach having opted to take the reins at Tottenham.

Just two wins in 12 Premier League fixtures have been secured since that point, with the club slipping out of the race for Europe as a result, and also exiting the Uefa Cup.

Four consecutive defeats have hardly helped Adams' cause, but Storrie insists a reversal in fortunes is just around the corner.

"It's quite amazing when you look at it. People are clambering for young managers in England and when they do and have a bad run, they are on their backs wanting them to be sacked," he told The News.

"No-one is writing anything about Tony and AC Milan (a 2-2 draw in the Uefa Cup) and the five matches unbeaten in the Premier League before the recent spell.

"Yet as soon as we lose a few all the knives are out.

"I was driving home from the West Ham game (a 4-1 Boxing Day defeat) and a few people rang up the radio station saying it was time for Tony to go. It's ridiculous.

"I've read the message boards and there are people saying the players are not playing for the manager - what a lot of rubbish that is. I hope Arsenal (1-0 defeat last weekend) dispelled that.

"No player has been knocking on my door so where is this unrest? If you look at the Arsenal game I don't think you can say that.

"We need the transfer window and a little bit of time and things will come right."
