Spurs to try again for Downing

Tottenham's opening offer for Stewart Downing was just £6million, but they are ready to bid again.

Middlesbrough do not want to sell any of their key players during the January transfer window, but have admitted they would consider any reasonable offers.

With this in mind the likes of Gary O'Neil, Tuncay Sanli and Downing have been strongly linked with moves away from the club.

Downing is keen to link-up with former Boro team-mate Jonathan Woodgate at Spurs, and White Hart Lane boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed his liking for the player.

However, Spurs' official opening salvo was worth just £6million with extra payments later.

The offer was met with anger at Boro's end, who want at least double that figure for the England midfielder, and the low mark of the opening bid could spur the North East club to shun any future approach from White Hart Lane.

Redknapp is desperate to land Downing and reports claim a bid closer to £12million is now being discussed, but it remains to be seen if Boro will let him leave.

The club are already fighting to keep Gary O'Neil at the club having rejected a bid from Portsmouth, but the midfielder is set to ask for a transfer to seal a move back to Fratton Park.
