O'Neil to demand move

Middlesbrough star Gary O'Neil is set to hand in a transfer request.

The 25-year-old joined Boro in January 2007 in a £5million deal from Portsmouth - the club he had previously spent his whole career with.

Despite becoming a firm fans' favourite on Teesside, O'Neil has never settled in the North East and was linked with a move back to Portsmouth earlier in the summer.

Portsmouth have now made moves to sign O'Neil and made a bid earlier this week, only for Boro to shun their offer.

Boro have told O'Neil, and the rest of their squad, they are not going to be allowed to leave the club this month - but the Bromley-born midfielder is not happy that the offer has been shunned.

Now O'Neil is ready to hand in a transfer request to try and push through a deal back to Fratton Park.

Boro do not want to lose O'Neil, although manager Gareth Southgate has always said he did not want to keep a player who was not happy, like in the case of Luke Young - who was allowed to join Aston Villa in the summer.

Now O'Neil is ready to test Boro's resolve by demanding a move in the coming days.
