Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed the club are holding talks with Wilson Palacios after agreeing a fee with Wigan Athletic.
A reported offer in the region of £14million has been accepted by the Latics, although speculation suggests Manchester City could bid for the midfielder.
Redknapp has already lost out to cash-fuelled City this transfer window, after the Eastlands club landed striker Craig Bellamy from West Ham.
But the Spurs boss is optimistic he will win the race to sign Honduras international Palacios.
He said on Sky Sports News: "I think we have agreed a deal and the chairman is talking to his people now to see if there is a deal to be done.
"Hopefully (we can secure the deal). Apart from Palacios, there is no one else really on the horizon here."
On missing out on Bellamy, he said: "I wanted Craig, obviously. I would have loved him to come here.
"I think he is a good player, and a fighter. He wants to win. He has terrific ability, in my opinion.
"I was keen to get him. But once Man City come in, it is very difficult to compete. They are working on another level compared to almost everybody else."
