Sbragia targets experience

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has ruled out the possibility of signing foreign players without Premier League experience in January.

Sbragia insists he is not against foreign signings in general but needs someone who can come into the squad and settle in immediately.

The Sunderland boss has been linked with West Ham defender Calum Davenport during the window as he looks to fight off the threat of relegation.

The Black Cats are 13th in the table, three points above the relegation places, but the former Manchester United and Bolton coach is finding it hard to find the right player.

"I definitely won't go for a foreigner this time because it takes a little bit of time for them to bed in," Sbragia said.

"The time for a foreigner to come would be the summer. I am looking for a player with Premier League experience, and that's difficult to get.

"A lot of clubs don't want to release them."

Despite their precarious position Sbragia believes that his current squad is more than capable of avoiding the drop and is only looking to add one player this month.

"I won't go for a novice, I just need somebody with a little bit more experience," he added.

"I would like to add another one because I feel the squad I have got, they are different class.

"They work well together, there is a bond between them and we are a bit concerned that maybe bringing a couple in might break that."

Sbragia has stated that none of his senior players would be leaving the club despite Pascal Chimbonda, El Hadji Diouf and Kenwyne Jones being linked with a move away.

The new boss also pointed out that the transfer window does not give him the time to get to know how a player operates away from the pitch.

"I don't know their personalities, I don't know what they are like off the field," he explained.

"I need to spend some more time and see players. The window, from my point of view, has come too early for me.

"I could have done with it in another couple of months and been able to have a look at some players and get to know their backgrounds. That's important as well."
