Harry Redknapp hailed Luka Modric as a 'top, top player' after Tottenham's 3-1 win over Stoke City.

Modric pulled the strings as Spurs moved up the table after a comfortable victory over their relegation rivals.

The Croatian has performed in fits and starts since joining Spurs last summer, but Redknapp believes the playmaker is now improving.

Redknapp said: "He showed against a strong, physical team that he is a great footballer and has a massive heart. He never shirks receiving the ball, he's a top, top player.

"That's what I tell them to do, get him on the ball because he can make things happen.

"I've played him in a 4-4-2 where most people said he couldn't play in England. It's an open looking team but I've got confidence we'll be okay."

The Spurs boss believes he now has plenty of options in midfield, with Jermaine Jenas back from injury and Wilson Palacios signed from Wigan.

He added: "I've got to shape up the team to get them in. Palacios is big and strong and that's why I signed him.

"I've got Jenas back so it's strong in midfield."
