Martin O'Neill has confirmed Ashley Young faces internal disciplinary action after the Aston Villa winger was sent off against Sunderland.
Young was dismissed during Saturday's 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light after a two-footed challenge on Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead.
O'Neill had no complaints with the red card shown to Young and the Villa boss is likely to mete out further punishment to the England international.
"The last thing I want to do is start defending a sending-off offence that I have no complaints with," said O'Neill in the Birmingham Mail.
"If I am going to defend him, that is not Ashley.
"Once you go two-footed like that it is a sending-off.
"The referees have been clamping down and I am right behind them on those incidents even though it affected us.
"I am sure I will take some internal discipline."
Young will also serve a three-match suspension, meaning he will miss the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Cheltenham or Doncaster, and Premier League games against Portsmouth and Wigan.
