Martin O'Neill praised his Aston Villa side for coming through a tough game following the 2-1 victory over West Brom.
Curtis Davies headed Villa in front and it was 2-0 just before half-time when Scott Carson fumbled Gabriel Agbonlahor's shot into his own net.
James Morrison pulled a goal back in the 49th minute as the Baggies responded strongly, but O'Neill admits he expected nothing less.
The result extended Villa's fine run of results and O'Neill accepts it was a relief to pick up three points.
"It was tough from start to finish. I expected that prior to kick-off," said the manager.
"Even at two-up, I never thought West Bromwich Albion were out of the game.
"They scored just after half-time and then put us under a lot of pressure.
"We have done brilliantly to win and obviously I am absolutely delighted."
Villa's second goal has been recognised as a Carson own goal but O'Neill believes Agbonlahor should be credited.
The striker completed 90 minutes despite being under the weather and O'Neill has hailed his attitude.
He said: "I think Gabby deserves a lot of credit for playing - and playing the whole game. He was pretty poorly.
"I am really pleased for him. People are saying it was an own goal but I think Gabby deserves it.
"He deserves it purely for being on the field. He's been ill all week.
"James Milner has played when not well this season too and their efforts have been fully appreciated."
