Tony Mowbray expects Jonathan Greening to be out for at least two weeks after the West Brom skipper suffered a knee injury against Burnley.
Greening hurt his medial ligament during the first half of the 2-2 draw in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at the Hawthorns.
The midfielder will miss Tuesday's game against former club Manchester United and Mowbray is hoping the injury is not too serious.
"We will have a scan on Greening," said the West Brom boss. "It could be very mild, a couple of weeks, but it will be at least two weeks.
"Greening is undoubtedly our most influential footballer and let's hope it's a short one."
The Baggies had battled back from Graham Alexander's penalty to take a half-time lead through Robert Koren and Kim Do-heon before Martin Paterson equalised a minute from time.
Roman Bednar struck the post in the second half for West Brom and Mowbray was left to reflect on the failure to score a third goal.
He added: "I think goals change games and if we'd scored a third goal, I don't think there was any way back for them and we'd have seen the game out.
"At 2-1, they could sniff it and they kept pushing and pushing and got the goal, which good teams can do.
"You need to take your chances, they took a chance and put extra men forward and got their reward."
Burnley's penalty was a result of a foul by Greening on Robbie Blake, but Mowbray was pragmatic about referee Mike Dean's decision.
Mowbray continued: "I thought it was comical at the time, yet the referee has given it.
"I try not to make any comment except that the referee gets paid to make decisions and that's the one he has made. Whatever I say is not going to change it.
"I imagine the pictures will show whether it was a penalty or not and people can make their own mind up."
