Gary Megson was disappointed to see his Bolton side slip up in a close contest for a second consecutive week.
The Trotters boss saw a hard-fought point snatched from his grasp away at Arsenal last Saturday, with Nicklas Bendtner grabbing a late winner for the Gunners.
It had looked for long periods as though they would go one better this weekend as they held Manchester United to a stalemate for 89 minutes at the Reebok Stadium.
However, Dimitar Berbatov then broke Bolton hearts as he grabbed the only goal of the game to hand all three points to the Red Devils.
"I think the manner of the result is not the same," Megson told Sky Sports.
"Last week we sat back and tried to catch Arsenal on the break, which we didn't do often enough, but they're one of the top four clubs in this country and one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
"This week we have played the biggest club in the country and the biggest club in Europe. I didn't think we sat back, at times we got forced back, but we didn't set out to sit back. We looked to push on United and at times we did that on a consistent basis.
"It looked like we were going to get something from the game, but it was really poor defending at the end."
Bolton remain 12th in the Premier League table despite slipping to a fourth consecutive defeat, but Megson is well aware that only two points separate the Trotters from the relegation zone.
"There will be a few clubs who would swap to be in the position we are, but there will be a few who wouldn't," he said.
"It isn't about three games, four games, ten games, it is about the season and we set off with no points and we want to get as many as we can."
Megson also admitted that he will be endeavouring to add to his squad during the January transfer window, with Portuguese striker Ariza Makukula and French defender Sebastien Puygrenier already brought in on loan.
"We are doing all we can to get players in, but they have to be the right players," he added.
"We are looking, but so is everybody else.
"We have brought in two players on loan, which we are pleased about, but there are a few sides in the Premier League that haven't brought anybody in. That shows how difficult it is in January."
