Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to see his Manchester United side grind out a 1-0 win at Bolton on Saturday.
The hard-fought victory took the Red Devils to the top of the Premier League table, usurping Liverpool at the summit.
It had looked for long periods as though the reigning top-flight champions would leave the Reebok Stadium frustrated as they toiled to no avail.
However, Dimitar Berbatov broke the Trotters' stubborn resistance moments from the end to hand United three priceless points.
"The way their goalkeeper (Jussi Jaaskelainen) was performing you start to think it might not happen - he has made five fantastic saves in the match," Ferguson told Sky Sports.
"I thought we played well but, as we know, Bolton are a very difficult team to play against and in a local derby you are always happy to win the match.
"Of course we left it very, very late."
Ferguson was also delighted to have wrestled top spot from Liverpool, even if it may only be for a few days.
"I don't think it's decisive. It's always nice to be there, it's the best place to be," he said.
"Obviously Liverpool have their game with Everton on Monday night. But at the moment, even if it is only for two days, we can reflect on a very good period for us.
"We have had to go through the whole of December and go to Japan (for the World Club Cup). We have had some really difficult games recently and they have done well the lads."
The narrow win was the seventh time this season United have prevailed 1-0, while another clean sheet sees them equal Chelsea's record of ten consecutive shut-outs in the Premier League.
"It means the concentration is good, because when you are attacking teams like Bolton you are always worried about the counter attack," added Ferguson.
"There were one or two moments in the second half when we had to deal with one or two difficult crosses and you have to keep your concentration and focus. I think we do that very well."
