Megson disappointed with draw

Bolton boss Gary Megson has said he is disappointed his side could not hold on to their two-goal lead at Blackburn.

The Trotters dominated the first half at Ewood Park, with goals from Matthew Taylor and Kevin Davies giving the visitors a healthy cushion against their North West derby rivals.

But the visitors were forced into defensive tactics for the majority of the second half, as Rovers rallied to seal a point.

Admitting his disappointment in not taking all three points on the road, Megson conceded that a draw was a fair reflection when assessing both halves.

"I think if you take the game overall and the balance of both halves it's probably a fair result," he said.

Reflecting on the second half and the late surge by Rovers, Megson said: "The first goal gave them momentum and after that we started to panic and didn't close the ball down enough.

"We didn't get around the park in the way that we did in the first half and consequently we were caught with a sucker punch for the second goal."

Benni McCarthy missed a controversial penalty for Blackburn after appeals for handball against Roque Santa Cruz were overruled.

Asked his views on the referee's decision to award a penalty, Megson said: "I don't think it should have been a penalty. I thought it was a handball.

"We've seen it happen before when a side is 2-0 up that the referee will look on matters like that in a more lenient way."

Megson admitted some relief to ending Bolton's run of four league defeats but added that his side need to start winning games if they are to avoid relegation.

"It would have been nicer to put an end to it with a win and in the first half we looked like we would do that.

"But it's not the first time that a team has gone 2-0 up and not gone on to win and I'm sure it won't be the last.

"From our point of view we're disappointed after our first-half performance that we haven't taken all three points."
