McCarthy rekindles WC dreams

Benni McCarthy is delighted to be back in favour at Blackburn as he sets his sight on a place at the 2010 World Cup.

The South African striker is desperate to be part of his country's plans next year, with his homeland making history as the first African country to host football's showpiece event.

McCarthy had feared that his dreams would be dashed during Paul Ince's disappointing tenure at Ewood Park, with the former England international reluctant to hand him regular first-team action.

However, with Sam Allardyce now in charge at Rovers, the 31-year-old has been returned to the side in recent weeks and is hoping to put his early season frustrations behind him.

"It is a relief to be playing again," McCarthy said in The Sun.

"I don't know why the last manager didn't pick me, but I would love to know why.

"Some managers just prefer certain players and if you don't fit in then you don't play, you just get the boot.

"It was difficult, of course. Especially when you get to my age and you are playing for a country that is hosting the World Cup.

"It was hard. Every time I kept going to the national team, where I am a really important figure, I wasn't playing for my club.

"It was hard but I am glad I have got that out of the way."
