Kinnear seeks assurances

Joe Kinnear is hoping to be given freedom in the transfer market to make his own decisions.

The Newcastle boss saw his predecessor Kevin Keegan walk away from the club as a result of what he saw as board interference in team affairs.

Previous St James' Park bosses have also grown frustrated at a lack of funding made available for squad strengthening.

A club which built a reputation in the past for squandering money has suddenly become very stringent.

That worries Kinnear as he knows he must bolster his playing staff during the January window if the Magpies are to avoid the unthinkable and slip out of the Premier League.

"I have to be aware of which direction the club wants to go in," Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle.

"People say we're too good to go down, but from the day I walked in here nothing's changed.

"We're fighting a relegation battle.

"I knew that from day one, but I didn't expect to be in this position with so many horrendous long-term injuries.

"I sit down and talk to them (owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias) about my ideas. I want to bring my own players in.

"There's a fair amount of players we need at the moment, and I want to make sure I'm in a position to do that.

"We need to look at the situation and say 'where do we go from here?'

"That's the only thing I need to sort out.

"Can I bring in the players I want - and can I get rid of the players that I don't want?

"It's a fantastic club, there's no question about that, but we need to give the fans what they want."
