Newcastle have given Shay Given permission to discuss a potential transfer with Manchester City.
The Republic of Ireland international has been a target for the Blues throughout the January window, and they appear to be closing on their man.
Joe Kinnear branded a £5million approach for Given as an 'insult' earlier in the week, with the keeper's valuation expected to be closer to the £7million mark.
City have not yet tabled a fresh approach for the experienced shot-stopper, but that is expected to be a formality.
While it remains to be seen whether the two clubs can reach a compromise, Given is now free to discuss personal terms with Mark Hughes' men.
