Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Rio Ferdinand has not suffered a 'major' back injury.
Ferdinand has not featured for United since the Fifa Club World Cup win over Liga de Quito in Japan before Christmas.
He was hoping to return for Sunday's game against Chelsea, only to be forced out of the match after training all week.
The centre-half visited a specialist on Monday and could now return against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup later this month.
Ferguson said on Sky Sports News: "He's been to the specialist and there's no major problem with his back at all.
"We think he should be back for the Tottenham cup tie, it's just a matter of having a series of exercises to do regularly and that will hopefully help it."
United will also be without Patrice Evra for three to four weeks after the full-back suffered a foot injury when creating the second goal in the 3-0 win over Chelsea.
"Evra will be out for three weeks minimum, and maybe four weeks, but it shouldn't be any more than that," added Ferguson.
"It was so simple, he just went over on his foot and has done a little ligament.
"We will try to get the swelling down and it may be seven to 10 days to get cleared up and then get back to training."
