Cap fits for Megson

Bolton manager Gary Megson says he'd happily back any plans for a Premier League salary cap to make it more balanced.

Manchester City's credit crunch-busting £100million bid for Kaka has been eclipsed only by the rumoured £500,000-a-week wage bill for the Brazil star - and Megson is one of many with concerns that such big money deals will create a very different playing field.

It used to be only the big four of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal who could afford to splash out because of the extra annual income from the UEFA Champions League.

But City's new owners have thrown convention out of the window, and the Kaka deal could set a dangerous precedent of overpricing if it goes unchecked.

"They (the authorities) are going to have to have a look at it if they want a more balanced Premier League," Megson said.

"The Champions League and Premier League are fantastic competitions but it is getting more and more difficult for the people who don't have a great amount of finances.

"While it would be great to see that kind of quality (Kaka) in the Premier League I'm not sure how it fits in with the minds of everyone who is interested in football.

"To be able to go into a sport, try to buy the world's best players and stick them in a stadium and try to buy success - I'm not sure how that sits."
