Bruce aims to keep squad intact

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce insists he does not want to lose any of his best players after Wilson Palacios was the subject of a bid from Tottenham Hotspur.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan told Sky Sports News ahead of his team's 1-0 defeat at Manchester United that a £10million offer from Spurs for Palacios had been rejected.

Speaking after the game, Bruce revealed his wish to keep his squad intact, with the likes of Emile Heskey, Antonio Valencia and Ryan Taylor also attracting interest.

However, Bruce acknowledged that, if the Latics' valuation is matched, he can do little to prevent one of his players moving to a bigger club.

"We are realistic when we're at Wigan, we do know that," Bruce told Sky Sports News.

"We do offer them a chance to come to the Premier League and prove themselves to be a Premier League footballer, but when the big boys start circling, coming in to nick your players, unfortunately if they pay enough they're always going to get their own way.

"That's the way of the world. It's frustrating because I wouldn't want to lose anybody.

"But everybody knows in football that everybody has their price and, of course, how do you deny the players that opportunity when they want to go and further their career."
