Wilkins drops striker hint

Ray Wilkins has hinted that Chelsea could be in the market for striking cover when the transfer window reopens.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has previously suggested the title contenders would not be buying new players in January.

However, following a 2-0 win over West Brom on Boxing Day, assistant boss Wilkins outlined the problems which would arise if Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba were both injured.

Anelka and Drogba started together for the first time this season against West Brom, and the latter weighed in with his first Premier League goal of the campaign.

Wilkins admits the Blues have coped well without Drogba for large parts of the season, but would be worried if Anelka also faced a spell on the sidelines.

"We have got the injury situation haven't we?" said Wilkins.

"If you lose both in the same game, you always need cover with injuries.

"You have to have a top end of your side with goalscoring ability otherwise we are not going to progress through the Premier League.

"We have supplemented Didier's injury with the players we have here and Nicolas' goals have been top drawer, so from that aspect we are thrilled and it has been fantastic."
