Wigan are in talks with Shakhtar Donetsk over a January swoop for midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski.
Latics boss Steve Bruce is looking to bolster his squad during the transfer window and has targeted the Poland international.
The two clubs have held initial talks over a move with a fee, which is believed to be in the region of £3.5million, being discussed.
The midfielder has won over 50 caps for his country and was on target during November's friendly international victory against Republic of Ireland at Croke Park.
Should the JJB Stadium outfit meet the Ukrainian club's asking price, then Lewandowski would only have to agree personal terms to complete his move to the Premier League.
Bruce's side are currently ninth after their Boxing Day success at home to Newcastle, but with the table tightly packed, have only a five-point cushion on the relegation places.
