Brown warns current crop

Hull City manager Phil Brown has hinted that he is looking forward to the transfer window after his side were dealt a 'reality check' at Manchester City

The Tigers, who shocked most with their excellent start to the season, suffered a 5-1 loss at Eastlands on Boxing Day.

Hull have now won just one of their previous 10 league outings and Brown has questioned his charges.

He told Sky Sports: "It was not good enough, as simple as that - certainly not the first half.

"Bottom line is that we knew there was a bit of turmoil going around in the City camp, and (we thought) if we could get a good start then who knows?

"When they got the goal they got their tails up. They are a good side. Coming in 4-0 down at half-time was just not acceptable.

"We've just had a harsh few words with the players there. They deserved it. One or two home truths came out.

"People talked before the game about Manchester City wanting to get to the transfer deadline, well maybe the shoe is on the other foot now.

"We are in a situation where we are in poor form. If we don't get our act together we will be in a relegation battle sooner rather than later.

"It is not harsh words, it is a reality check. We are probably five wins from staying away in this position. The reaction cannot come anyway quicker."

Brown berated his players at half-time in public on the pitch, a decision he made after feeling disappointed by the players' mentality.

He explained: "You have around 4,000 travelling fans who have made arrangements about their Christmas to get to a game on Boxing Day.

"The performance was not good enough. The quality of the opposition was probably better today.

"Our mentality wasn't right today. We weren't at the races individually or collectively. And collectively is what it is all about, as a team."
