Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari lamented his side's finishing as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham to miss out on going top.
Chelsea dominated possession throughout but the visitors were solid at the back and Scolari's men took just one of the few chances that they managed to create.
Craig Bellamy stunned the home crowd by giving the visitors a 33rd-minute lead before Nicolas Anelka equalised six minutes after the restart.
And although Frank Lampard, half-time substitute Didier Drogba and Alex were then all denied by Robert Green, West Ham's Carlton Cole went closest to winning it at the death.
"It was a difficult game for us," Scolari told Sky Sports.
"We spent more time with the ball, had three or four chances and scored only one goal.
"I think if we had more quality in the last third then we would have won the game."
The draw prevented Chelsea overtaking Liverpool at the top of the table and means they have now failed to win in their last four domestic games at home.
While the Blues have a 100 per cent away record in the league, they have already dropped 14 points at Stamford Bridge this season.
"When we play here it's different to when we play away," said Scolari.
"Away we have more space, we're more open and we play more with the ball.
"Maybe now we are thinking this isn't our home and we're not scoring enough goals here."
Scolari attempted to give his side a cutting edge by introducing Drogba for Michael Ballack at half-time but he is still unconvinced about playing both Drogba and Anelka up front.
"It's dangerous on both sides because I lose something in the middle," added the Brazilian coach. "We need to train with it more."
