Owen offered new Toon deal

Newcastle United have formally offered a new contract to striker Michael Owen.

The 29-year-old's current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and he could leave Tyneside on a free transfer next summer should fresh terms not be agreed.

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear confirmed after Sunday's 3-0 victory at Portsmouth that plans were in place to open discussions this week with the England international.

The Newcastle captain is now reportedly set to study the offer with his representatives.

Owen signed at St James' Park from Real Madrid in 2005 and has netted 25 Premier League goals in 56 appearances since the switch.

  • I reckon United would do well do acquire the services of Owen. I would be an interesting thought, but then again, I don't think either Utd or Owen will be keen on accomodationg each other now.
