Kinnear to hold Owen talks

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has confirmed that contract talks with striker Michael Owen will begin on Tuesday.

Owen opened the scoring in 52nd minute at Fratton Park as Newcastle defeated Portsmouth 3-0 to move up to 14th position in the Premier League table.

It was the 29-year-old's seventh league goal of the season and Kinnear has now revealed that the club are set to offer the former Liverpool frontman a new deal.

Kinnear also acknowledged that his skipper was back to his best and insists he would prefer Owen's goals over the cash he could earn by selling the striker in the January transfer window.

"I would love him to stay with us," Kinnear told Sky Sports News.

"Negotiations will start on Tuesday and I don't think it will be long before he will be back in the England squad.

"He is a key player for us I would rather have Michael scoring goals for us than the cash."

Kinnear also praised his side in what he described as a near perfect day for his side.

"We were due an away win because we played very well in our previous away games but didn't get maximum points.

"We came with a game plan, I felt at half-time they were there to be beaten and I'm delighted that's what happened.

"I thought we took our goals very well, controlled the game at times played at our tempo. I thought Nicky Butt was outstanding in the middle of the park, we got our substitutes right it was the perfect day really."
