Brown rues City's luck

Hull City boss Phil Brown felt the crucial borderline decisions went against his side as they were sunk by a late own goal from Kamil Zayatte against in-form Aston Villa.

The Tigers had an early goal disallowed when Nicky Barmby was penalised for a foul on Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel following an innocuous challenge on the American.

And then in injury time referee Steve Bennett changed his mind over a penalty decision as City were beaten 1-0 to extend their winless run to 11 games.

Bennett pointed to the spot after thinking that Ashley Young had handled a header on the line but then - correctly - reversed the decision after consulting an assistant.

"It's a tough one. The referee got it wrong because he gave it originally," Brown told Sky Sports.

"The linesman took up a position that he was giving the penalty but for some reason they've changed their mind between them.

"The referee is 15 yards away but he consults a linesman who was 40 yards away from the incident."

If justice was done there, the Tigers could count themselves unlucky not to be given a goal when Barmby forced Nigel Reo-Coker to slice a clearance into his own net as Villa rode their luck to go fourth in the Premier League.

"With a bit of fortune we could have got our noses in front," Brown added.

"I would like to see the Nick Barmby incident again. We didn't seem to get those decisions tonight."

Brown did at least take consolation from a vastly improved performance from his side following their 5-1 drubbing at Manchester City on Boxing Day when he conducted a public inquest on the pitch into their first-half showing.

He added: "What is relevant is that is a great performance from Hull City and one I am quite proud of.

"I'm quite pleased with the mentality, quite pleased with the response."
