Big Sam eyes rapid response

New Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce is eager to get his 'teeth stuck into the job' as he looks to address the club's 'difficult and unexpected position'.

The former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United boss was announced as Paul Ince's successor at Ewood Park on Wednesday.

Rovers currently find themselves in the relegation zone, having lost 10 of their opening 17 Premier League matches this season.

Allardyce concedes he faces a tough task in hauling the club up the table but is optimistic of turning the side's fortunes around.

He said on Sky Sports News: "When both parties want to come to the same decision together then you can move through the process very quickly.

"Realising the situation Blackburn are in, the sooner you sort the negotiations out the sooner you can get your teeth stuck into the job and get on with trying to improve results.

"We are in a difficult and unexpected position. Having been there before and knowing what it is all about I am hoping the players will respond very quickly.

"You can never say you are too good to go down. We just have to get the players playing to their maximum as quickly as possible.

"It won't be easy. I am hoping this is a blip and something they can overcome with my guidance.

"The bottom three is the hardest place to be. You live with great pressure. Under this pressure my players need to get back to playing their best.

"Physically the players look fine to me. But mentally they might be drained. Mental fatigue is far greater than physical fatigue.

"Hopefully we can get back to playing as a team. The main priority is securing our Premier League status as early as possible."

Allardyce went on to insist he will be under no obligation to sell his star players in the New Year, while he confirmed he will first evaluate the quality of the squad before identifying where to strengthen.

He said: "We don't have to sell anybody in the January transfer window. I have joined the club and I know the players well, I know how good they are.

"Why would I want to sell any of the best players? Trying to evaluate the squad is the most important thing, before I even think about January.

"At this moment in time it is unfair for me to talk about where the team needs strengthening."
