Sunderland manager Roy Keane was left to lament his side's finishing as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat by West Ham.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play through a deflected strike by Valon Behrami in the 20th minute.
And that proved enough for the Hammers to claim their first win in eight as the Black Cats missed a host of opportunities to draw level.
Top scorer Djibril Cisse failed to find the target with a string of free headers as Sunderland failed to avoid their fourth defeat in five.
"We put lots of balls into the box and had lots of free chances but we just didn't produce that bit of quality at the end," Keane told Sky Sports.
"I'm sure Djib will be bitterly disappointed, like all good strikers. When you get the opportunities he had today you should at least test the keeper.
"That disappoints us all after the game - that we didn't really test their keeper enough today.
"It's hard to take. I don't think there was a problem with the players' efforts and desire, we just needed that bit more quality in the attacking third."
Sunderland had a strong shout for a penalty late in the first half when James Collins appeared to pull down Kenwyne Jones as they waited for a free-kick into the box.
Moments later, Collins also appeared to pull down Cisse when through on goal, which could easily have resulted in a red card.
But Keane refused to point the finger at referee Mike Dean for his side's failure to get back into the game.
"We can't complain too much in the sense that the referee made the decisions and we've got to get on with it," he said.
