Tony Adams is confident that the Portsmouth board will give him money to spend when the transfer window re-opens in January.
The new Pompey chief admits he has already begun piecing together his plans for the New Year, and is relishing the prospect of testing his judgement.
Experiencing life on the Premier League managerial ladder for the first time in his career, the former England international accepts that his recruitment policies could make or break him.
While acknowledging that he must tread careful in his search for fresh faces, Adams believes his choices will receive the full backing of club owner Alexandre Gaydamak.
"In the recent history of Portsmouth Football Club, the owner has been 100 per cent behind his manager," the Pompey boss told The News.
"The owner has made no indication he will not be 100 per cent behind me.
"I think he will give me a free hand and I will have to work it.
"I will be judged by my player recruitment and I think managers should be sacked on that basis. That is what they should be judged on."
Adams is determined to retain the services of his most prized assets, despite speculation linking a number of his players with a move elsewhere, and believes his squad is in need of fine-tuning rather than overhauling.
He said: "The team doesn't need massive surgery. We won the FA Cup last season and we have some very good players here.
"I'd love to build a football team here. This club has come a very long way and for me to keep things ticking over, I do need a couple of players per year.
"In terms of recruitment, you need to bring in players who are better than the ones you already have and the ones you are going to let go."
