Beye devastated by dismissal

Newcastle defender Habib Beye has admitted he was devastated to be sent off against Manchester City.

The Senegal international was shown a straight red card just 12 minutes into his comeback from injury after giving away a penalty for a challenge on Robinho.

The decision was harsh on Beye as it appeared the defender made contact with the ball as he tackled Robinho during the 2-2 draw at St James' Park.

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear has asked referee Rob Styles to review the incident in the hope that the red card may be rescinded.

Beye was unhappy with the decision of Styles as he was looking to get a run in the side after two months on the sidelines with an Achilles problem.

"For me that was the start of my season and I'm devastated by the decision," Beye told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"I wouldn't have made the tackle if I didn't think I could have got the ball, and that's why I am so disappointed.

"It was my first game back for some time, and to be sent off so early is very disappointing."

If Newcastle fail to have the decision overturned it means Beye will miss this weekend's Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland and the former Marseille man admits he will be gutted to miss out.

"I know how big this game is to the supporters, not only for the fans who want us to win, but also for me personally," added Beye.

"I would have been playing against one of my best friends in the game in Djibril Cisse. Fingers crossed, the decision will be overturned."
