Clarets break bank for Fletch

Burnley have completed the signing of striker Steven Fletcher from Hibernian for a club record fee of £3million.

The Scotland international has signed a four-year contract with the Premier League newcomers.

Clarets boss Owen Coyle has enjoyed a productive day in the transfer market having earlier secured the signature of defender Tyrone Mears from Derby.

Fletcher's goal-scoring exploits for Hibs earned him a reputation as one of the brightest talents in Scottish football.

The 22-year-old scored 43 goals in 156 league appearances at Easter Road and progressed from the Under-21 ranks to the full Scotland side.

Celtic and Wigan were both keen on securing his services but, as revealed by skysports.com earlier on Tuesday, Burnley were the first to have a bid accepted.

Fletcher believes he will grow as a player under former St Johnstone manager Coyle.

"I am absolutely delighted to sign for the club," he said. "It is a great feeling to be here and I am just looking forward to getting the season started now.

"As soon as I heard that Burnley were after me, and knowing Owen Coyle as I do from my time in Scotland, I thought this was the right place to come and develop my career.

"The opportunity came along in January for me to join Celtic, but Hibs did not think it was the right time to move on.

"When the chance arrived to come to the Premier League and play for a club like Burnley, I was glad they accepted that and let me come down."
