Burnley have had a bid rejected for Hamilton star James McCarthy.
The Premier League new boys were hoping to steal a march on a number of rivals by making a move to lure the sought-after midfielder to Turf Moor.
Burnley are thought to have tabled a bid in the region of £750,000 for the highly-rated 18-year-old, but their offer was dismissed out of hand by Hamilton.
The Scottish side are facing a real battle to keep hold of the Republic of Ireland Under 21 international, with McCarthy regarded as one of the best young prospects in British football.
Portsmouth and Celtic both had offers turned down for McCarthy earlier this summer as Hamilton hold out for a higher fee for the teenager.
Burnley boss Owen Coyle is thought to be a big admirer of McCarthy and it remains to be seen if he will come back with a new improved bid for the starlet.
