Hughes - Clarets want Fletch

Hibernian manager John Hughes has revealed that Burnley are interested in signing striker Steven Fletcher.

Clarets boss Owen Coyle has spoken with Hughes about the availability of the frontman and the Premier League newcomers are expected to table a bid in the next few days.

Hughes only took over as Hibs boss three weeks ago but already he faces up to the prospect of losing his £3.5million-rated star asset this summer.

The 22-year-old is said to favour a move to Celtic, where he would link up with former Hibs manager Tony Mowbray, but as of yet no bid has been made from the Hoops.

"Owen called to give me the heads up that there's an interest there," Hughes said.

"He asked me about Fletch and I told him he can compete, he's good in the air, quick and when he gets the ball on that left foot he always hits the target.

"Having been travelling yesterday I need to get up to date not only with what's happening regarding Fletch but a number of things so I'll be meeting the chairman and chief executive today to discuss a range of matters."

Despite Fletcher's exit from Easter Road looking increasingly likely, Hughes admits he hasn't ruled out the possibility of the Scotland international staying.

"I am a great admirer of Fletch and I'd love to have the opportunity to work with him," he told the Scotsman.

"I am a manager and a coach and I work with the players at my disposal. But I also understand football is a business and Hibs run a very good business."
