Fabregas admits Pep admiration

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas maintains that he has received no contact from Barcelona but admits that Pep Guardiola is his idol.

The Gunners midfielder has been persistently linked with a return to the Camp Nou, where he spent his youth career before moving to England in 2003.

Fabregas insists he is happy at Emirates Stadium and that he has not been approached by UEFA Champions League, Primera Liga and Copa del Rey winners Barca.

But the Spain international has hinted that working under former Barca midfielder and now manager Guardiola, who steered the Catalan giants to the unprecedented Treble in his maiden campaign in charge, would not be a totally unpleasant prospect.

"If that happened it would be unusual. But nothing has happened," Fabregas told Sport when asked if his compatriot had been in touch.

"Pep has always been my idol. I have always played in his position and wear the number four like him. He was my hero when I was young and the one I have tried to be like.

"I tried to imitate what he did as a player and now as a coach he is showing how good he is. He is someone that will always be important in my life."

Fabregas has now set his sights set on ending Arsenal's long-running trophy drought, which stretches back to success in the 2005 FA Cup.

"I want to win trophies," he added. "When a player ends his career he wants to be able to look back and feel that he was an important player and to have some medals.

"That is what everyone aims for. I want to win and I am happy at Arsenal, but we have four years without any success and for a player that wants to win things that is a long time.

"It is clear that it would be special, but I am also clear that Arsenal made me captain for half a season and that has brought added responsibility and ties me to the club even more.

"Now I would really like to lift a trophy as captain of the Gunners."
