Coyle - Experience is key

Burnley manager Owen Coyle believes the squad's more experienced players will play an integral role in their first season back in the top flight.

The Clarets gained promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship play-offs last season after 33 years out of England's top division.

One old head in Graham Alexander signalled his intention to end his career at Turf Moor when he signed a new one-year deal on Monday.

The 37-year-old played 61 games last term chipping in with 11 goals in the process and Coyle believes he can help bring on the side's young players such as Martin Paterson, Chris Eagles, Chris McCann and Kevin McDonald.

"We believe our young players can evolve and get better, allied to our older heads keeping them right. They have shown as well what they can do and how to perform," he said.

"So I am excited that the likes of Graham Alexander, Robbie Blake, Steven Caldwell and Wade Elliott now have the chance to pit their wits against some of the top players in world football."

Burnley travel to Stoke City on the opening day of the season but Coyle is aware of the importance of his team's home form if they are to survive the drop this campaign.

"We have to be ready for the pace and power of the Premier League," he added. "That is why our pre-season preparation has to be right.

"We are singing from the same hymn sheet as we know how important the club is to the town.

"We have to try and maintain the same home record we had last year when Turf Moor became a fortress."
