Benitez capture excites Blues

Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan is expecting big things from the club's record signing Christian Benitez.

The Ecuador international is set to complete his big-money move to the Blues next week and will arrive with a reputation as something of a crowd-pleaser.

Hard-working, with a keen eye for goal, the 23-year-old frontman has already set pulses racing around St Andrews.

"It's still a bit of a punt, a gamble, on someone his age," Sullivan told the Birmingham Mail.

"He could be absolutely anything. But from what we've seen and what we've heard, we're excited.

"He's got a decent international goalscoring record and what's attractive is that his goal to game ratio is improving, it was far better this season than it was last.

"I'm told he's also the sort of player who will chase anything, he will go after hopeless cases to try and make something happen in order to get a result.

"He's quite slightly built and we will have to make sure we get balls on the floor to him.

"But he's strong with it, he's a tough little character and we believe he can be a real threat to defences in the Premier League.

"We're sure he will become a favourite with our supporters but they have also got to give him a little time to adjust."

Sullivan has admitted that Birmingham made an 'exception' in funding a move for Benitez, but feels the Blues will get value for money out of their latest acquisition.

"Our budgets are always flexible, although we have very little money at all," he added.

"We'd rather have quality rather than quantity, that's where we fell down last time.

"And we are trying to do it in a way that we won't utterly wipe the club out, but in a controlled manner, combining risk with a bit of sanity.

"If the money runs out, then myself and David Gold will have to put an amount in ourselves."
