But they could not even keep their part of the bargain as familiar failings helped West Ham seal all three points.
Carlton Cole fired the Hammers ahead late in the first half before Boro equalised through Gary O'Neil in the 50th minute.
But Junior Stanislas restored West Ham's lead thanks to a goalkeeping gaffe from Brad Jones and Boro could not respond.
